The Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) is one of the world’s foremost teaching hospitals. It was created by the merger of two of Boston’s most renowned and most enduring hospitals, both at the vanguard of health care and medical innovation.
This fascinating history is a testament to the people who served these institutions and shaped medicine as we know it today.
In 1896, as part of their missionary charter, the female leadership of the Methodist Church founded Deaconess Hospital to care for Boston’s indigent residents. Twenty years later, at a time of rampant anti-Semitism, Beth Israel was founded by the Jewish Community to provide a setting where their doctors could deliver medical care without the threat of discrimination.
Changes to health care in the 1980s and ’90s brought these two giants together. Their trailblazing work includes many medical firsts:
• Deaconess performed the first successful liver transplant in New England
• Deaconess pioneered minimally invasive coronary bypass surgery
• Beth Israel developed the first implantable cardiac pacemaker
Today, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is consistently ranked among the best in America. Excellence in surgery, with minimally invasive approaches to many procedures, tops the list of accomplishments at BIDMC. It is also the official hospital of the Boston Red Sox.

About the Author
Barbara Schwartz has been a licensed independent clinical social worker for more than half a century. Barbara worked at Children’s Hospital in Boston and then became director of pre-admissions at McLean Hospital. A resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, Barbara now maintains a private psychotherapy practice.
